Q&A
Enquiry Details:
Q: Any salaried full time and part time staff? If yes, how many and will they continued to stay with the new owner?
We do have part time staff whom come and go. You will have to find staff to run it if you are not running it.
1. What sort of board game and arts & crafts held at the cafe?
We have more than 40 board games ranging from RISK, Monopoly, to card games like UNO. We have kids corner for the children to do clay modeling for free. We do have chargeable suncatcher painting which the little girls love doing it. We have done quite a lot of birthday parties where the parents want the children to do clay modeling. We charge $15 per pax for just the activity on top of the food. Our website have these details as well .
2. What type of food is served at the cafe? Is the food cooked at the cafe or catered from external supplier?
You can visit our website (www.hobbyistcafe.com) on the food menu, events menu, craft and board games menu. We serve burgers, fries, wedges, spring rolls, samosa, spaghetti, chicken chop, fish and chips, pizza, sandwiches, curry chicken with rice, and all sort of canned and dispenser drinks. We serve Walls ice cream and dessert like Logan jelly too. We cook and prepare the food. The ingredients are all from supplier. Typically just warming up and some frying will be done.
3. Besides the regular events and activities held in Bishan Sports Hall, how much revenue from walk-ins and corporate event?
Revenue from walk-in range between 8-10k per month. We get events booking every other month on average. Between oct to dec last year, we have 12 events booking. There is big potential to ramp up events revenue. No marketing has been done like distributing flyers to the Bishan neighborhood (20,000 residents) and industrial commercial avenue around sin ming, Bishan, amk. Was just too busy to initiate it.
4. Do you need to market the cafe to generate revenue? If yes, how much is your marketing spend?
As mentioned above, no marketing has been done except our website. Also due we were tied up by the bi-weekly home United soccer matches in the evening, international gymnastics competition in Nov 14, Jan 15, National Gymnastics competition in March 15, Inter-school competitions in April 15. And now the SEA games in May and June. As I have a full time job, didn't have time to look into marketing. The in-stream regular annual events already is a stretch for me.
5. Do you have database of your customers?
We have not been collecting customer database. Thought of doing membership but didn't initiate as yet.
6. After takeover, will the new owner be guaranteed of the regular events and activities being held at the cafe?
Absolutely. Bishan sports hall has been the key avenue for Gymnastic which is what it was built for. It is the official gymnastics competition both nationally and internationally. The last youth Olympic gym was held here.
7. The business has been set up since 2012. What is the monthly running cost and net profit over the last 12 months?
Monthly running cost is the rent with misc charges plus GST totally $4,050. Water is free. Electricity around $500-$700. F&B profit margin is between 75-80%. On an average of 10k revenue, nett profit is 3-4k, not counting those events where the revenue goes between 12-15k.
My view is there is potential for better growth given the 80 pax size cafe and centralize location. The new owner like yourself should embark onto proper marketing into schools, corporations, the 20k neighborhood while capitalizing the regular schools, national and international events. There are at least 10 schools around the vicinity. And with all the place properly furnish with the TVs, AV systems, dining tables and sofa/chairs, all kitchenware, all suppliers line-up (after the intense market research), freezers, fridge, POS, regulatory licensing done, newly revamp website (since Nov 14) with ecommerce, NETS, etc. it just a walk in take over on the regular revenue streams, and focus on marketing will be a key to bring it to the next stage. And not forgetting we are the only F&B in the entire huge complex.
